Situated along the northern
shore of Lake Ontario (part of the Great Lakes system), Toronto is one of the
southernmost cities in Canada. As a result, Toronto has a surprisingly moderate
climate boasting the warmest springs and summers in Canada. Toronto residents
enjoy the welcome changes of a seasonal climate. Abundant wildflowers and mild
temperatures herald the coming of spring. Springtime temperatures in the high
60's are mild and pleasant. Spring showers are infrequent and the evenings
cool. Average annual rainfall is 27 inches. Summers are warm but not unbearably
so. Temperatures range from the mid 60's to the low 80's. Close proximity to
the Great Lakes results in a fair amount of humidity but not high enough to
deter the great outdoor opportunities proffered throughout the long summer
days. Fall is characterized by plenty of sunshine and crisp breezes. The
turning leaves provide a backdrop of inspirational beauty and beckon outdoor
enthusiasts on long wooded hikes. Snowfall blankets the landscape each winter
with an annual average fall of 51 inches. Cold but not severe, winter
temperatures range from 38 down to 23 degrees. Although chilly, locals are
undeterred and find endless ways to stay outdoors. Skating, skiing and
snowboarding in addition to countless winter festivals keep the city lively and
fun throughout the winter months.
